Karl Pojello was a Lithuanian professional wrestler, who was born on 13 Feb 1893 in Steigviliai, Lithuania. In 1906, he moved to Russia in St. Petersburg, to work in a pharmacy with his brothers Antanas and Motiejus.

At the age of 18, he was thought to be one of the best wrestlers in the whole Russia. In 1913 Pozela won a world wrestling tournament in Breslav.

And he died on 4 Sept 1954 due to lung cancer.

Karl Pojello Career

As a successful amateur wrestler, he joined a group of skilled wrestlers and traveled with them from city to city. With all wrestlers, he traveled to and wrestled in China & Japan and in 1924 he came to Chicago.

His career took a harsh turn when in 1927, he met a Lithuanian wrestling promoter A. Tamašiūnas. There he beat Canadian wrestling champion Carl van Wurden in under three minutes. however, it wasn’t until he beat Johnny Mayers, another Lithuanian wrestler, considered to be a middleweight champion of the world when he came to fame and recognition.

At the time he was one of the most well-liked professional wrestlers in U.S. Pojello came back to Europe and wrestled there until world war 2 when he and his friend Maurice Tillet were forced to return back to the U.S.

 

Cause of Death:

Karolis Pozela died on Sept 4, 1954, due to lung cancer. Then hearing of the death of Karl, Maurice Tillet had heart failure.

He was taken to Cook County Hospital where he died on the same day. They’re buried together at the Lithuanian National graveyard. Pojello’s friend and promoter Tamašiūnas built them a headstone. Text on the headstone reads: “Friends Whom Even Death could not part.
